Rath Yatra is the chariot festival of Jagannath at Puri, when the deities leave the temple and travel the public road to the Gundicha temple. It is one of the rare occasions on which the images are seen outside the sanctum, by anyone at all.
Three enormous wooden chariots are hauled by hand along the Grand Road by crowds in the hundreds of thousands. Diaspora cities from London to Toronto now hold their own processions on the same date.
