Why some months have no dates

A wedding or griha pravesh is not held during these periods, whatever the day’s nakshatra and tithi:

  • Kharmas, while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena: 1 Jan to 14 Jan
  • Shukra asta, while Venus is combust: 1 Jan to 17 Feb
  • Kharmas, while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena: 15 Mar to 14 Apr
  • Adhik (Mal) maas, the extra lunar month added to keep the calendar in step with the Sun: 17 May to 15 Jun
  • Guru asta, while Jupiter is combust: 15 Jul to 13 Aug
  • Chaturmas, from Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi: 25 Jul to 20 Nov
  • Shukra asta, while Venus is combust: 20 Oct to 29 Oct
  • Kharmas, while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena: 17 Dec to 31 Dec

How these dates are chosen

  • The Moon is in a nakshatra the texts give for moving into a new home: Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
  • The tithi is not Pratipada, Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya.
  • The day is not a Tuesday and Saturday.
  • Bhadra (Vishti karana), the inauspicious yogas, Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are cut out of every window, and a window shorter than half an hour is dropped.
  • Windows run from sunrise to the next sunrise, so many run through the night, as weddings often do. A window is listed under the day whose sunrise it follows, as almanacs do, so one that opens at 4 AM sits under the previous date.
  • No window falls during Kharmas, Chaturmas, an Adhik maas, or while Jupiter or Venus is combust.

What this page does not do

A family priest usually fixes the exact time inside one of these windows by the lagna, the rising sign, and some traditions also keep Holashtak and Panchaka, which this page does not check. Almanacs also differ in which tithis and weekdays they accept. This page follows the stricter reading, so it lists fewer dates than some.
