Vastu Shastra

Vastu divides a plan into nine zones and gives each an element, a guardian and a graha. Every room placement follows from that grid — and so does every remedy, because the tradition assumes most people cannot move a kitchen.

Where this comes from, and where it does not

Every other cluster on GrahaVaani renders an expert-reviewed corpus. Vastu is not in that corpus. These pages are a careful summary of the mainstream Vastu Shastra tradition — the standard mandala, the eight dikpalas, the room placements that follow — and they are written as description of what the tradition holds rather than as our own assertion. Where schools genuinely differ, the page says so instead of picking the tidier answer. An expert review is pending, and until then this cluster should be read with that in mind.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala

The mandala assigns the four intercardinal corners to four of the five elements — water to the north-east, fire to the south-east, earth to the south-west, air to the north-west — and leaves the centre to space. The four cardinal directions carry a guardian and a graha rather than an element. Almost every placement rule on this site is that grid applied to one room: fire belongs in the fire corner, weight in the earth corner, water below ground in the water corner, and the centre stays empty.
