What is Krishna Janmashtami?
Krishna Janmashtami marks Krishna’s birth on the eighth day of the waning moon in Shravana. He was born at midnight in a prison at Mathura, and the festival is built around that hour.
How it is observed
Devotees fast through the day and break it at the Nishita Kaal window below — after midnight, on the following calendar day. Maharashtra adds dahi handi, the human pyramid raised to break a pot of curd.
