What is This Dosha?
Veda Dosha (also called Vedha Dosha or simply Vedha — "obstruction" or "piercing") is a compatibility blemish in Indian Vedic Astrology that arises in nakshatra (lunar mansion) matching. Certain nakshatras are held to mutually obstruct one another: when the Moon-nakshatras of two people fall on such an opposing pair, an invisible "piercing" is said to block the natural flow of harmony between them. In this knowledge base, Veda Dosha appears specifically as a nakshatra-compatibility factor (used alongside Ashtakoota/Guna matching), not as a chart-yoga of planetary lordships.
How It Forms
Each nakshatra has a designated Vedha partner (an obstructing counterpart). Veda Dosha is present when the two charts being matched carry Moon-nakshatras that form such a Vedha pair. The obstruction is considered mutual — it pierces in both directions regardless of which partner holds which nakshatra.
Examples confirmed in this knowledge base: - Ashwini ↔ Jyeshtha — mutual obstruction by Veda Dosha - Mrigashira / Dhanishta ↔ Chitra — mutual obstruction - Purva Phalguni ↔ Uttara Bhadrapada — Veda Dosha incompatibility
The complete obstructing partner for any given nakshatra is recorded in that nakshatra's own profile — see the Incompatible nakshatras sections in `knowledge/nakshatras/<nakshatra>.md` (e.g., Jyeshtha, Chitra). Those per-nakshatra files are the source of truth for specific pairings.
Effects
- Reduced natural compatibility and rapport between the two individuals
- A sense of recurring obstruction, friction, or "blockage" in the relationship despite other favorable factors
- In match-making, it is treated as a cautionary flag that should lower the overall compatibility weighting, not as an automatic disqualification
Who is Affected
Veda Dosha is relevant to relationship and marriage compatibility analysis (Kundli Milan / nakshatra matching), where both partners' Moon-nakshatras are compared. It does not describe a condition of a single chart in isolation.
Exceptions & Cancellation Rules
- A strong overall match on the other compatibility factors (high Guna/Ashtakoota score, favorable 7th house and Venus/Jupiter placements) can substantially soften the practical impact of Veda Dosha.
- Some traditions hold that when the same planetary lord or friendly lords rule the two nakshatras, the obstruction is mitigated.
- As with all single-factor doshas, it must be weighed within the whole compatibility picture rather than read in isolation; never deliver a relationship verdict on Veda Dosha alone.
Interpretive Caution
Treat Veda Dosha as one input among many. It belongs to the nakshatra-matching layer of compatibility work; always cross-read it with the broader synastry (7th house, Venus, Jupiter, Dasha alignment) before drawing conclusions, and avoid alarmist phrasing.
