Vat Savitri commemorates Savitri, who followed Yama to reclaim her husband’s life. Married women keep it on the new moon closing Vaishakha in the north, and on the following full moon in Maharashtra and Gujarat — the same story, two reckonings.
Women fast and wind thread around a banyan (vat) tree while circling it, retelling Savitri’s argument with Death.
Vat Savitri 2026 is on Saturday, May 16, 2026. It falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya.
Vat Savitri is also known as Vat Purnima, Vat Savitri Vrat, Savitri Amavasya. These are regional names and spellings for the same festival.
