Ram Navami marks the birth of Rama on the ninth day of the waxing moon in Chaitra. Because Rama is held to have been born at midday, the festival is dated by which day’s *madhyahna* the tithi covers — not by sunrise, which can fall on the other day entirely.
Temples read the Ramayana through the day and cradle an image of the infant Rama at noon. Many keep a fast until the midday hour passes.
