What is Karva Chauth?
Karva Chauth is the day-long fast married women keep for their husbands, on the fourth day of the waning moon in Kartik. The fast is broken at moonrise, not at sunset — which makes the moonrise time below the single most important fact on this page.
How it is observed
Women take sargi before dawn, fast without food or water through the day, and gather in the evening for the katha. The fast breaks after the moon is sighted, traditionally through a sieve, and then the husband’s face.
