ટૂંકમાં

Mangal Dosha (also known as Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) is a significant concept in Vedic astrology related to marriage compatibility. It arises when the planet Mars (Mangal) is positioned in certain specific houses of a person's birth chart (Lagna Kundli).

Yes — classical exceptions apply

Which house placements make you Manglik?

Mangal Dosha is judged by the house Mars occupies. Six of the twelve houses count, which is why roughly half of all charts qualify under the broad definition — being Manglik is common, and on its own it is not a verdict on a marriage.

Mars in any of the other six houses does not form Mangal Dosha. Even where it does, the classical exceptions below frequently cancel it.

How It Forms

Manglik Dosha occurs when Mars is placed in any of the following houses from the Ascendant (Lagna): - 1st house - 4th house - 7th house - 8th house - 12th house

Effects

  • Delay in marriage
  • Disputes between partners
  • Emotional or mental stress in married life
  • Potential indicator of separation or divorce

Who is Affected

Any person whose birth chart (Lagna Kundli) has Mars positioned in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant is considered Manglik.

Prevalence and Interpretive Caution

Roughly 40–50% of charts carry some form of Manglik Dosha. Its reputation for breaking marriages is disproportionate to its actual predictive weight — classical texts define specific cancellation rules and modifying conditions that are routinely ignored in casual matchmaking. A Mangal Dosha reading should never be accepted without first checking the cancellations below.

Exceptions & Cancellation Rules

Manglik Dosha is considered nullified or substantially weakened when any of the following apply:

  • Both partners are Manglik — the dosha cancels mutually
  • Mars is in its own sign (Aries in 1st for Aries Lagna, or Scorpio) — Mars expresses its nature with dignity rather than damage
  • Mars is exalted in Capricorn
  • Mars is aspected by Jupiter — Jupiter's aspect (5th, 7th, or 9th) on Mars is the most frequently cited classical neutralizer
  • Mars is conjunct Jupiter or the Moon — benefic conjunction tempers Mars's aggression
  • Mars is in the 7th house and is that house's lord (for Aries or Scorpio Lagna) — functional benefic status overrides the dosha
  • The native is above 28 years old when marrying — some classical sources hold that Mars's marital affliction weakens significantly after this age
  • Strong benefic influence on the 7th house or 7th lord independently stabilizes the marriage indication

The actual root of marital difficulty lies in the overall condition of the 7th house, its lord, and Venus (for men) / Mars (for women) — not in Mangal Dosha read in isolation. See Marriage for the full marriage-assessment framework.
