Ugadi is the lunar new year of the Deccan — Yugadi in Karnataka and Andhra, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Cheti Chand for Sindhis. It falls on the first day of the waxing moon in Chaitra, the opening day of the Hindu lunar calendar.
