Best placed in the East
East is an accepted placement for underground water and shares the north-east’s logic, with the same caution about overhead tanks.
What the East governs
East is Indra’s direction and the Sun’s: the first light, and the direction the tradition orients study, prayer and the start of the day towards. Like the north it wants openness rather than mass.
Where the Water tank belongs
Water storage is the clearest case of the mandala’s logic: underground water goes to the water corner, overhead tanks to the heavy one. Getting this backwards — a tank overhead in the north-east, a sump in the south-west — is among the faults the tradition treats most seriously.
