Two starting points, one sky
Both zodiacs cut the same band of sky into twelve equal 30° slices and give them the same twelve names. They disagree about one thing only: where the first slice begins. The tropical zodiac, which almost every Western horoscope is built on, begins wherever the Sun stands at the March equinox — the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. That point is defined by the relationship between Earth and Sun, so it is tied to the seasons. The sidereal zodiac, used across Indian astrology, begins from a fixed position measured against the background stars. One system anchors itself to Earth’s year; the other anchors itself to the constellations. Everything else about the difference follows from that single choice.
Why the two zodiacs drifted apart
Earth spins like a slowing top. Its axis traces a slow cone, taking roughly 25,800 years to come back around, and astronomers call this the precession of the equinoxes. Because the axis moves, the equinox point creeps backwards against the stars at about 50.3 arcseconds a year — near enough 1° every 72 years. A zodiac pinned to the equinox therefore travels with it, while a zodiac pinned to the stars stays put. This is not a matter of interpretation or belief. Precession was described in antiquity, is measured routinely today, and is corrected for by every observatory and satellite. The two zodiacs are simply keeping two different kinds of time, and the gap between them widens by about a degree every human lifetime.
They once agreed exactly
Around 285 CE the equinox point and the sidereal starting point sat on top of each other. On that date a tropical chart and a sidereal chart would have come out identical: same signs, same degrees, no argument to have. The difference we are discussing did not exist yet. Since then precession has opened a gap of roughly 24.2°, which is a little over three-quarters of a 30° sign. That number is not a rounding of anything; it is a running measurement that grows very slightly every year, and any chart you cast today applies the current value rather than a fixed historical one. Understanding that the systems once matched is often what makes the split feel less like a dispute and more like arithmetic.
What the drift does to your chart
Twenty-four degrees is most of a sign, so almost every position in a chart shifts. In practice roughly four people in five find their Sun in a different sign when the same birth data is read sidereally. The Moon, the planets and the rising point move by the same offset. Nothing about the underlying astronomy has changed — the Sun was where it was on the day you were born, and both systems agree on that raw position to the arcsecond. What differs is the label applied to it, because the two conventions count from different zero points. Read side by side, the two charts are the same photograph with two different grids laid over it.
How to tell which zodiac a chart is using
There are a few reliable tells. If a chart was cast from your birthday alone and calls you by the sign you have always known, it is tropical. If it asks you to pick an ayanamsa setting before it will draw anything, it is sidereal — that setting is the offset value itself, and nothing else needs one. Sanskrit sign names such as Mesha or Vrishabha point the same way, as does the presence of the twenty-seven lunar segments called nakshatras, which no tropical printout carries. A quicker check: compare a planet’s degree in the two charts. If it has moved back by roughly twenty-four degrees rather than changing arbitrarily, you are looking at the same body under the other convention.
